Partners In Policing is a Community Awareness Program educating the community through those closest to us, our Neighborhood Watch Block Captains! The partnership provides the Torrance Police Department with an avenue through which information can be more quickly disseminated into the community.
The program allows community members to experience hands-on exercises relating to the duties, services and responsibilities of policing. Participants are also provided a forum where their questions can be answered by experienced field officers.
Through the Partners In Policing Program, the community gains a better understanding of the policing function; the Torrance Police Department, in turn, receives valuable input regarding community policing needs.
By graduation time, the block captains involved have gone through 12 sessions involving everything from the police academy to the apprehension and prosecution of criminals. They have learned why we do things a certain way, and have had the opportunity to actually experience certain training scenarios.
Through our interactions we have certainly strengthened our partnership with the community and together have gained valuable insights. After offering the Partners In Policing Program to all 450 block captains, we will branch out to our 45 member Volunteer Program. From there we plan to move on to community organizations and businesses.
Together, the Torrance Police Department and the participants in Partners In Policing are using the "teamwork" approach to make our community a safer place to live and work. Call our Community Affairs Office for more information at (310) 618-6392.
