A Pathfinder for Grade 5

Good books to start with. 

There are several excellent reference books about States. Use the index of the book to find the words in the boxes below or ask your librarian to help you use the book. Most reference books cannot be checked out. 

  1. J 031 World Book Encyclopedia, Chicago: World Book, 1999-2003. World Book Encyclopedia is arranged alphabetically. Also, check the index, for other possible related topics. 
  2. R317.3 W927 World Almanac and Book of Facts, New York, NY: World Amanac Books. Almanacs are published every year and can give you the most current information on population and state officials.
  3. There are three series of books that have been written with the 5th grade State Report in mind. Many of our libraries have placed these books in a special section. Ask the Reference desk for assistance. They are: 

  4. America the Beautiful, New York, NY: Children's Press. 
  5. Celebrate the States, New York, NY: Benchmark Books. 
  6. From Sea to Shining Sea, New York, NY: Children's Press.

SPECIAL NOTE: Because so many of our 5th grade students are researching the states at the same time, our state books have a limit of 7 days check out with no renewal.
