Words on Wheels eligibility requirements

Words on Wheels (WOW)
Eligibility, Borrowing Policies, and Registration

ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible to have Torrance Public Library materials delivered to your residence by a library volunteer, you must meet both of the following conditions:

1. Reside within Torrance city limits. If you reside in zip code 90502, or east of Western Avenue in zip code 90501, or if your residence's utility bills are not payable to the City of Torrance, you are considered a non-resident. However, you may be eligible for services to the homebound provided by the public library in the city where you live. Call any local public library to determine your city of residence or to find a library with a home delivery program in your area.

2. Be unable to visit the library due to temporary or permanent long-term disability or illness. Do you have difficulty walking, or carrying materials? Reading the computer screen of the online catalog, reading titles of materials on the shelves, or finding your way around the library? Communicating with library staff due to a speech disability or hearing impairment? Are you unable to drive, have no one to drive you to the library on a regular basis, or are unable to make use of public transportation? This is by no means a complete list, but if you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you may benefit by registering for the Words on Wheels delivery service.

BORROWING POLICIES:
The volunteer assigned to you will select materials for you, based on your interests profile and/or specific requests, and borrow them on a special card (not your own), for a loan period of six weeks.

Materials eligible for loan include:

  • Books (including large print books)
  • Audiobooks (books on cassette and books on CD)
  • Music (CDs and cassettes)
  • Talking books from the Braille Institute - Audiobooks different from commercially published editions and require a special cassette player (provided at no charge). They may be borrowed by WOW patrons, but a separate registration form must be filled out. Registration requires certification by a physician, nurse, social worker, or librarian. Your volunteer can deliver a form to you to get you enrolled.

Magazines, videos and DVDs are currently not eligible at this time for loan in the WOW program.

REGISTRATION:
To sign up for the Words on Wheels service, please phone the Words On Wheels Coordinator, Philip Ross, at (310) 323-7200 or, print out the Patron Registration & Interests Profile form, fill it out, and follow the instructions for submitting it.

The WOW Coordinator will assign a volunteer deliverer to you as soon as one becomes available.
