Sprinkler And Backflow Technician

Definition

Under technical and task supervision from supervisory personnel, maintains, repairs and installs sprinkler systems and backflow prevention devices on City owned properties; and does related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Distinguished from Groundskeeper in that an incumbent does not normally perform routine custodial and maintenance work to park buildings or horticulture duties in park and landscaped areas. Distinguished from Senior Groundskeeper in that an incumbent does not normally supervise a crew performing skilled gardening work in City parks and landscaped areas. Distinguished from Light Equipment Operator in that an incumbent does not operate light power driven equipment such as skip loader with attachments, three to five ton rollers, gang mower, leaf rake and stump grinder.

Examples Of Duties

  • Removes, maintains, repairs and installs sprinkler heads;
  • checks valves, vacuum breakers, pumps and similar devices;
  • installs, repairs and operates automatic sprinkler controllers;
  • removes, repairs and checks automatic sprinkler controllers;
  • removes, repairs, installs and tests valves, pumps, backflow prevention devices and other necessary pipes and fittings in sprinkler systems;
  • prepares reports;
  • supervises workers assigned to help with various work projects;
  • drives single axle vehicles such as pick-up and two ton flat bed and loads and unloads necessary tools and equipment.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of:
  • The operation and installation of backflow prevention devices;
  • General park construction and maintenance methods and materials;
  • Safety practices relating to sprinkler repair and backflow prevention devices;
  • Hydraulics and water flow, including valves, pumps and sprinkler controllers;
  • Plumbing as related to cross connections and water purity;
  • Tools and equipment used in testing backflow prevention devices and automatic controllers.
  • Ability to:
  • Repair and install sprinkler systems, pumps and backflow prevention devices;
  • Overhaul automatic electronic sprinkler system controlling devices;
  • Perform duties requiring repeated bending and stooping and lifting of heavy and very heavy objects;
  • Keep records and make reports;
  • Supervise subordinates;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • License Required

    A valid California Motor Vehicle Class 3 Operator's License. A valid certificate of competence issued by the County Health Officer certifying to the ability to test backflow prevention devices.

    Experience

    Three years of experience in installing and maintaining sprinkler systems, or in park maintenance work.

    Education

    No requirement.
