Park Equipment Operator
Definition
After receiving daily work orders from supervisors, operates power driven equipment used in park maintenance or park construction; performs general manual or laboring work in park maintenance or construction; responsible for instructing helpers and assuring that assignments are completed in a safe and efficient manner; and does related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Distinguished from Park Services Supervisor in that an incumbent does not supervise crews performing skilled gardening or groundskeeping work in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks or landscaped areas. Distinguished from Senior Groundskeeper in that the incumbent primarily operates power driven equipment. Distinguished from Groundskeeper in that the Groundskeeper is not primarily assigned to operate a variety of power driven maintenance and construction equipment.
Example Of Duties
Operates power driven maintenance and construction equipment such as skiploader with attachments, gang and rider-type mowers, leaf rake, boom truck, trencher, hi-ranger, compressor, refuse packer, and auxilary equipment such as gravel spreader, compressor and stump grinder in maintaining or constructing park facilities;
operates power mowers, edgers and uses hand tools and equipment used in maintaining and renovating lawns and other landscaped areas;
works with and instructs a helper ensuring that the assignments are completed in a safe and efficient manner;
performs minor maintenance and adjustments on assigned equipment and keeps daily records;
loads, transports and unloads stone gravel, asphalt, dirt, timber and other materials;
occasionally, operates heavy maintenance and construction equipment;
when the nature of the job does not require constant operation of equipment, performs general park maintenance or construction work.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
The operation and maintenance of power driven equipment, including skiploader with backhoe and other attachments, gang and rider-type mowers, hi-ranger, leaf rake, trencher, stump grinder, compressor, boom truck and refuse packer and related park maintenance and park construction equipment;
Methods, materials, and safe use of tools used in maintaining and constructing landscaped and recreation areas;
The uses and purpose of hand tools;
Safe driving practices and State and Local laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on streets, roads, and highways.
Ability to:
Operate and perform required maintenance and adjustments on assigned equipment with skill and safety;
Perform heavy manual labor;
Perform general grounds maintenance and landscape construction work requiring bending, stooping, stretching and lifting;
Complete daily work records and reports;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the general public;
Follow oral and written directions in order to satisfactorily carry out job assignments.
License Required
A valid California Driver's License of the appropriate class or grade.
Experience
One year of full time experience in park grounds, landscape and facilities maintenance including the operation of light, power driven park maintenance and/or construction equipment.
Education
No specified minimum. |
