Light Equipment Operator

Definition

Under general supervision, operates light, power-driven, maintenance or construction equipment; performs a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks; and does related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry level class used for operating on a full time basis light construction and automotive power-driven equipment. As distinguished from the class of Semi-Skilled Laborer an incumbent operates on a full time basis light power-driven automotive and maintenance construction equipment. Distinguished from Heavy Equipment Operator in that an incumbent does not operate motor sweepers, loaders over five tons gross weight, large tractors, rollers and dozers. Distinguished from Construction Equipment Operator in that an incumbent does not operate motor graders and cranes.

Examples Of Duties

  • Operates light power-driven maintenance and construction equipment such as skiploader with attachment, three to five ton roller, gang mower, leaf rake, trencher and auxiliary equipment such as gravel spreader, oil distributor, compressor and stump grinder.
  • Performs minor maintenance on assigned equipment and keeps operating records;
  • loads, transports and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber and other materials;
  • occasionally on an emergency, relief or training basis operates heavy maintenance and construction equipment;
  • assists in resurfacing, oiling and patching roads.
  • Performs heavy, semi-skilled, manual labor construction and maintenance work, when the nature of the job does not require constant operation of the equipment.
  • Operates pneumatic drills such as spade and jackhammer.
  • Minimum Qualification

    Knowledge of
  • The operation and maintenance of power-driven equipment, including trucks, loaders, rollers, compressors, and related equipment;
  • Methods, practices and materials used in public works construction and maintenance;
  • The uses and purposes of hand tools;
  • Safe driving practices and State and local laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on streets, roads, and highways.
  • Ability to:
  • Operate assigned equipment with skill and safety;
  • Perform heavy and manual labor;
  • Work cooperatively with others;
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • License Required

    A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License of the appropriate class or grade.

    Experience

    One year of full time experience operating vehicular equipment.

    Education

    None required.
