Electrician

Definition

Under general supervision, installs maintains and repairs traffic signals, street lighting circuits, motors, pumps and building electrical wiring; and, does related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

An Electrician performs journeyman electrical work. Distinguished from an Electrician Helper in that an incumbent is required to have the knowledge and skill to work independently on a broad range of electrical work. Distinguished from Communications Electrician in that an incumbent works on electrical equipment other than communications equipment. Supervision is received from a Traffic and Lighting Supervisor. Completed work is not generally reviewed by supervisors. Supervision may be given to Electrician Helpers and other non-journeymen.

Examples Of Duties

  • Installs, maintains and relocates traffic signals;
  • replaces damaged signals and parts;
  • repairs and replaces signal controls/timing devices;
  • designs traffic signal interconnects for better traffic movement.
  • Installs and maintains street lighting circuits;
  • replaces street lamps and damaged street lights.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces electrical facilities and equipment in City buildings, parks, airport and other facilities.
  • Maintains and repairs pumping station alarms, motors and control circuits.
  • Meets with representatives from outside organizations regarding equipment being used or malfunctioning;
  • insures proper stock is maintained to accomplish work assignments;
  • reads and works from blueprints;
  • prepares records and reports of completed work;
  • estimates job costs;
  • tests electrical equipment.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of:
  • Electrical theory;
  • State' Federal and Local Electrical Codes;
  • Safety requirements of working with high and low voltage circuits;
  • Solid state and electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to:
  • Install, maintain and repair traffic signals, street lighting circuits, motors, pumps and other electronic devices;
  • Read blueprints or schematics;
  • Work safely on poles, platforms and from mechanical hoisting equipment;
  • Follow written and oral directions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside organization representatives, the general public and fellow employees.
  • License Required

    A valid California Motor Vehicles Operator's License of the appropriate class or grade at time of appointment.

    Experience

    Four years of recent experience at the level of an electrician helper or recent completion of an apprenticeship program in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

    Education

    High school graduation or equivalent.
