Street Sweeping

Street sweeping is necessary to keep our streets and storm drains clean.  Anything that is dumped into the storm drains will go directy to the ocean.

Street Sweeping Schedule

The streets in Torrance are swept Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.   Click here for a .pdf map of the sweeping routes.  Some major streets and industrial areas are swept at night to accommodate traffic.

Unlike many other City services, the street sweeping schedule does not move back a day or adjust in any way when a holiday occurs. When a holiday falls on a sweeping day, that area's sweeping is skipped for that week.

Areas of the City with excessive street parking, often around schools or apartment buildings, are posted to keep the street open for sweeping on the area's scheduled sweeping day. Cars parked in the posted areas will be ticketed by the Police Department.  For questions or concerns about parking tickets, call the Police Department at 310-328-3456.  Click here for information on paying parking tickets online.

A petition is needed to get an area posted with no parking signs for street sweeping.  The petition must contain signatures of at least two-thirds of the residents in the area to be posted.  Each signature must list the signer's address and phone number.  The completed petition should be sent to:  City of Torrance, Public Works Dept., Attn:  Sanitation Manager, 20500 Madrona Ave., Torrance, CA  90503.  The petition will be evaluated and the signatures verified.  After the evaluation, the appropriate action will be taken.  Areas of special consideration, such as around schools and apartments, will be evaluated on an individual basis.  Click here for a sample petition.  This sample may be printed and filled out.  Print as many copies as needed to accommodate the needed signatures.

To keep our storm drains clear, minimize pollution into our oceans and make our street sweeping more effective, do not hose down driveways or rake yard waste into the gutter for sweeping. This material should be placed in a refuse container instead. Street sweeping equipment is not designed to collect yard waste or piles of leaves and will instead scatter the material over the rest of the street. If possible, avoid watering, and particularly over-watering, the day of and before your scheduled street sweeping.
