FY2009-11 Residential Street Slurry Seal Program, I-100

Engineering Manager:  Craig Bilezerian, P.E.
Project Engineer:  Henry Completo

Description:
Slurry seal is a liquid mixture of asphalt emulsion and sand that, when applied, extends the life of existing asphalt pavement and improves the appearance of a neighborhood.  Slurry seal is a cost-effective method of maintaining the City's residential roadways. The City maintains more than 69 million square feet of asphalt roadways, most of which are in residential areas. Each year slurry seal is applied to approximately 3 million square feet of residential roadways in approximately 5 neighborhoods. The work is performed during the summer months (June through October) due to the warm temperatures.

The application of slurry seal requires that the City close a street or street segment for one (1) day. The work is usually scheduled on a weekday, however, not on the day of trash collection.  Two weeks prior to application, the City mails a Notice to affected residents.  The Notice includes a map of streets to be slurry sealed and the dates for the work.  Two (2) days, or 48 hours, before the actual start of work on a specific street, the City's issues another Notice.

Project Status:
The City has selected streets for the FY2009-10 program.  Design work will be ongoing through April 2010 and it is anticipated the project will be advertised for bid in May 2010.  The streets will be slurry sealed in summer 2010.
