Gene Barnett was elected to the City Council on June 3, 2008. Prior to his election, he was appointed to the City Council on June 26, 2007 to fill the seat vacated by Councilwoman Pat Mc Intyre upon her retirement on June 2, 2007. 

Gene Barnett is a previous employee of the City of Torrance, serving 35 years before retiring as the Community Services Director on May 12, 2007. 

During his tenure as a department head, Barnett provided leadership and guidance in the development of numerous significant projects including the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, Charles H. Wilson Park Sports Center, the Torrance Art Museum, the Madrona Marsh Preserve, Columbia, Descanso, Sur La Brea, Greenwood, Miramar, Discovery and Lago Seco Parks.  

A Torrance resident since 1954, Gene is a product of the Torrance Unified School District; he graduated from North Torrance High School, attended El Camino College and then California State University, Long Beach where he earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Recreation/Public Administration.

He is married to Linda M. Barnett and they have three daughters and five granddaughters.
